Running an in-school radio station using digital and broadcast technologies has far-reaching literacy and numeracy benefits, writes Melissa Fulton.
The Radio Room project began as collaboration between me and a parent at the Brunswick East Primary School (BEPS) who has experience in community radio. So far, it has been an incredible learning journey, not only for the children involved but for parent Jacinta Parsons and myself as educators. The Radio Room hosts workshops for children from grade one to six, where they learn the technical skills, literacy skills and leadership skills needed to build our school radio station from the ground up. “Using the microphones and the panel is the best bit.” Says Keir from the 1/2/3 workshop. “I’d never used a microphone before.”
